Software/Firmware Updates The latest versions of the I-O Print Server's bootcode and operating firmware as well as the latest version of the I-O Configuration Utility are posted on the I-O FTP site. 1. From your Internet browser, select the following URL: ftp://ftp.iocorp.com/ftp/ 2. Select the LAN Print Server directory, then the appropriate print server (5450, 5430, etc.). Refer to the document called "Which Firmware Version to Use for Upgrades.txt" To identify the proper firmware version. Note: that print servers using V1.?? Firmware are updated to newer V1.?? Firmware; print servers using V2.?? Firmware are only upgrades with newer V2.?? Firmware, and so on. DO NOT attempt to put a different firmware series on your print server, or it will be damaged and will have to be returned to I-O for repair. (Don't put a V2, V3, or V4 series firmware on a V1 print server.) The new software/firmware is available in the following files: Filename Description F5450???.exe Operating Firmware for the I-O 5450 B5450???.exe Bootcode for the I-O 5450 FirmZ.exe Twinax/Coax print driver for I-O LAN RPC PCU???.exe PrintControl setup utility IOCU???.exe I-O Configuration Utility For other I-O Print Servers, the file names are similar (i.e. the firmware for the I-O 5430 is F5430???.exe and so on). The "???" represents the version of that file. I-O AFP/IPDS Print Servers are available in three models -- the first two models are oriented towards AS/400 IPDS printing and are both called the I-O 5435. The two models differ only in the amount of RAM. Models produced prior to July 1, 2000 are equipped with 4 MB RAM while models produced after July 1, 2000 are equipped with 8 MB RAM. The third model is oriented toward IPDS and TN3270e printing from IBM Mainframe systems and is identified as the I-O 5435e. To ensure that you download the proper bootcode and firmware for each of these models, see the following chart: I-O 5435 (4 MB) Bootcode = B5435???.exe Firmware = F5435???.exe I-O 5435 (8 MB) Bootcode = B5x35???.exe Firmware = F5x35???.exe I-O 5435e Bootcode = B5e35???.exe Firmware = F5e35???.exe Note: If you should attempt to download bootcode or firmware different than the specific model of print server, you could cause a lockup condition that can only be cleared by shipping the print server back to I-O Corporation. Therefore, be very careful to match the right bootcode and firmware with your print server. 3. Follow the instructions in this file to download the files you need from the FTP site and install them on your PC (the I-O Configuration Utility) or on the I-O Print Server (the firmware files). ============================================================== Instructions for Upgrading the Flash Memory of the I-O Print Server and for Installing a New Version of the I-O Configuration Utility The LAN Print Server directory of I-O's FTP site contains separate directories for each print server (5450, 5430, etc.). Each print server directory contains the following types of files: IOCU???.exe self-extracting file containing the I-O Configuration Utility B5450???.exe self-extracting file containing bootcode for the I-O 5450 MPS. F5450???.exe self-extracting file containing firmware for the I-O 5450 MPS. FLRPC???.exe self-extracting file containing firmware I-O LAN RPC/ FIRMZ???.exe self-extracting file containing twinax/coax print drivers for the I-O LAN RPC. Note 1: For other I-O Print Servers, the file names are similar (i.e. the firmware for the I-O 5430 is F5430???.exe and so on). The "???" denotes the version of the respective file. Note 2: Since some features impact multiple files, you should always use the latest version of all files. For example, the capability of using TN5250e for AS/400 printing requires new firmware and PrintControl utility files. Note 3: It should be noted that the bootcode does not change as often as the other files. You should note the version number currently installed on your I-O Print Server (found on the self-test). If it is the same as found in this directory, you donot need to download the bootcode. ------------------------------------- Downloading and extracting the files: 1. Download the file you need into a temporary directory such as c:\temp. 2. After successful downloading into the temporary directory, do the following: From your Windows 3.xx or NT 3.x desktop select "File", then "Run". From your Windows 95 or NT 4.x select "Start", then "Run". 3. Then enter the location and the name of the downloaded file. For example: "c:\temp\f5450105.exe" or "c:\temp\pcu103.exe" 4. Press . 5. A DOS window will open and show the status of the self-extraction process. When the process is complete (the Windows title bar will say "Finished"), close the window. ------------------------------------------------------------ Installing a new version of I-O's Configuration Utility 1. After you have downloaded and extracted a new version of the I-O Configuration Utility, proceed with the following instructions: From your Windows 3.xx or NT 3.x desktop select "File", then "Run". From your Windows 95 or NT 4.x select "Start", then "Run". 2. Then enter: \setup, where is the directory where the extracted files reside. For example: c:\temp\setup3. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen during the installation process. Note: You will need to remove the old version of the I-O Configuration Utility prior to installing a newer version. The installation process will give you the option to remove the older version and then finish. You will then need to start the installation process over again to do the actual installation. ------------------------------------------------- Updating the Flash Memory of the I-O Print Server After you have downloaded and extracted a firmware file(or on rare occassions, a bootcode file), follow these instructions: 1. Start the I-O Configuration Utility. 2. Highlight the I-O Print Server you want to upgrade. If you are using TCP/IP to communicate with the I-O Print Server (check the "Protocol" column on the far right), you must have a TCP/IP address configured. 3. Run a self-test by clicking on the button labeled "R" in the top tool bar. This self-test will be used to compare the configuration settings after the firmware update is complete. In certain cases, you will need to reenter some configuration information (specifically if you have configured the I-O Print Sever to use the Netware Remote Printer function and are updating from a firmware version older than 1.26). You may also run a more extensive self-test by pressing the Mode button on the I-O Print Server. 4. From the Options Menu on the title bar, Select "Firmware Update". 5. Enter the location and name of the extracted file (FIRM5450.???, FIRMZ.??? or BOOT5450.???) in the field titled "Firmware Update File". 6. If you are upgrading the bootcode file of the I-O Print Server (BOOT5450.???), place a check mark in the white box labeled "Boot Block". 7. If you are upgrading the I-O LAN RPC's twinax or coax print drivers using the "FIRMZ.???" file, you will need to place a check mark in the white box labeled "LAN RPC Printer Driver". 8. Press "OK". The I-O Print Server will now be updated. 9. When the update is complete, reset the I-O Print Server by highlighting the target I-O Print Server from the I-O Configuration Utility's "List of Devices" screen. Click the button labeled "R" in the top tool bar. After the I-O Print Server prints a self-test page, verify that the new firmware level is shown on the top of the page. You may also check the other configuration settings by comparing this self-test page with the self-test run (in step 3 above) before performing the firmware update.
